John D. Rockefeller

John D. Rockefeller, (1839-1937). US industrialist and philanthropist. He formed the Standard Oil Company and by 1878 had gained control of almost all the oil refineries in the country. He put much of his wealth into the Rockefeller Foundation (1913), an educational and scientific charity. His grandson Nelson (1908-79) became governor of New York in 1958 and was vice president of the US (1974-76).
