Jonas Edward Salk
Jonas Edward Salk, (1914-95). US medical scientist. A specialist in public health and epidemic diseases, he produced in 1954 the first vaccine against polio. The vaccine consists of dead polio viruses and is injected into the body, in contrast to Sabin’s vaccine, which is usually administered orally on a sugar lump.
