Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Andreyevich (1844-1908). Russian composer. Born into a naval family, he studied at the Naval College in St Petersburg; as a composer he was largely self-taught. His works include such operas as The Snow Maiden (1882) and Tsar Sultan (1900), which includes the famous ‘Flight of the Bumble Bee’. He also wrote symphonies, piano concertos, and the orchestral suite Scheherazade (1888), which was later used for the ballet of the same name (1910).
