The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones,. British rock group: the principal members of the original line-up were Mick Jagger (1944- ), Keith Richard (1943- ), Bill Wyman (1936- ), Charlie Watts (1941- ), and Brian Jones (1944-69). The Stones were formed in 1962 and had their first number one hit with the song ‘It’s All Over Now’ in 1964. They subsequently built up a world-wide reputation, based largely on their aggressive style of performance and notorious public behaviour. Their hits of the 1960s included ‘Satisfaction’, ‘Paint It Black’, ‘Ruby Tuesday’, and Jumping Jack Flash’. After Jones’s death by drowning, he was replaced by guitarist Mick Taylor (1948- ), who was replaced in turn by Ron Wood (1947- ). Al-though the late 1960s is still seen as their most creative period, the Stones’ success has continued with such al-bums as Exile on Main Street (1972), Some Girls (1978), and Voodoo Lounge (1994). Now in their fifties, the group show no sign of retiring; in 1995 they undertook their biggest and most profitable tour to date.
