Tomas de Torquemada

Tomas de Torquemada, (1420-98). Spanish inquisitor. A Dominican friar, he became Spain’s first Inquisitor General in 1483. He ruthlessly persecuted heretics, becoming notorious for his use of torture to obtain confessions and for the severity of his punishments. He is said to have condemned 10,000 people to death by burning.
