Oscar Hammerstein II

 

Oscar Hammerstein II, (1895-1960). US librettist. The grandson of the impresario Oscar Hammerstein, he worked with the composer Rudolf Friml on Rose Marie (1924) and Jerome Kern on Show Boat (1927), which includes the song ’01’ Man River’. His famous partnership with Richard Rodgers produced such famous musicals as Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), and The Sound of Music (1959).
