Sir William Wallace

Sir William Wallace, (c. 1270-1305). Scottish soldier and patriot. After Edward I of England had assumed control of Scotland (1296), Wallace led attacks on the English garrisons and took Stirling Castle (1297). The English were subsequently expelled from Scotland. In 1298 Edward reinvaded Scotland and Wallace’s army was crushed at the Battle of Falkirk. He then spent several years waging guerrilla warfare. After his capture in 1304 he was hanged, drawn, and quartered.
