Maria Callas

Maria Callas (1923-77), US opera singer of Greek de-scent, born Maria Kalogeropoulos in New York. A coloratura soprano, she studied singing at the Athens Conservatoire and first appeared at the Opera in Athens in 1945; she later became one of the leading singers at La Scala, Milan, and gained world-wide fame for her passionate style.
