Chandi

Chandi, Justice Anna, b. 1905, judge. Born in Trivandrum (Kerala) she was one of the earliest lady students to graduate from Travancore State. She enrolled herself as an advocate in 1930, being the first lady advocate of Kerala, and built up a lucrative practice. She was also a member of the Travancore Legislative Council from 1932 to 1934. In 1938, she was appointed a judicial officer, being the first woman in India to hold such a post. In 1948, she was promoted as District and Sessions Judge, and in 1959 became a judge of the Kerala High Court. She was also the founder-editor of Shreemathy, the first woman’s magazine in Kerala.
