Kisa Gotami

Kisa Gotami, fl. ca. 560-480 B.C., Buddist nun. Born of poor parents, she was badly treated by her husband and became lean and thin and so came to be known as Kisa Gautami (`Emaciated Gautami’). Her son died of snake-bite and she implored the Buddha to revive the child. Buddha told her that he could do it if she could bring something from a home which has never been visited by death, but she was able to find no such home. She realized her helplessness, gave up her home and family and became a nun. Her sayings are recorded in the Buddhist scriptures.
