Hazra, Matanga

Hazra, Matanga, 1870-1942, martyr. Born in a poor peasant family of Midnapore district in Bengal, she was given away in marriage at a very young age to a man of 60, and was widowed at the age of only 18. She came to live with her “step-son, leading a life of pious devotion. She joined the national movement in January 1932 when she was past sixty and participated in national activities. She was shot and killed by the British soldiers Nvhil leading a procession in Tamluk on 29 September 1942.
