Kempananjammani Avaru

Kempananjammani Avaru, 1866-1935, queen of Mysore. She was the widow of Maharaja Chama Rajendra Wodeyar who died suddenly in 1894, and became regent to her 10 years old son, Krishna Raja Wodeyar the new Maharaja. Ably assisted by chief minister Seshadri Ayyar she ruled the state for eight years. It was during her regime that many important public works were undertaken, including the hydro-electric station at Sivasamudrum and a college for women, as also the Indian Institute of Science, at Bangalore. In 1912, her son was invested with ruling powers.
