Edvard Grieg
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), Norwegian composer. The son of a diplomat, he studied at Leipzig and Copenhagen, where he met the Norwegian Romantic corn-poser Rikard Nordraak. Through him, Grieg came to appreciate Norwegian folk music, which inspired works such as Norwegian Dances and Lyric Pieces (1867-1901) for piano. He toured Europe as a pianist and conductor and met Liszt and Ibsen in Rome (1869-70). His most famous compositions are the incidental music to Ibsen’s Peer Gynt (1876) and his piano concerto (1868). Grieg spent much of his later life in a house on the Troldhaugen fjord in Norway.
