TaraBai, 1675-1761, Maharatha queen-regent. Widow of Rajararn, a son of Shivaji, she took over the government of the Maharatha. State after the death of her husband (1700) as the regent to her son, Shivaji III. She pursued the struggle against the Mughals with astonishing vigour, from her capital Satara. She was later involved in bitter conflict with Shahu (Shivaji II), a grandson of Shivaji, who returned from Mughal captivity in 1707 to claim the throne, and with his Peshwa, Balaji Vishvanath, which destroyed Mahratha unity. She even gloated over the Mahratha defeat at Panipat (Jan. 1761). She died in Dec. 1761„ at the age of 86.
