Carl Jung

Carl Jung, (1875-1961). Swiss psychologist. Having initially collaborated with Freud, Jung soon developed his own ideas, disagreeing with Freud’s emphasis on the sexual origins of mental disorders. He proposed and examined the difference between two personality types, ‘extroverts’ and ‘introverts’, and argued for the existence of a ‘collective unconscious’ consisting of symbols and ideas held by all people. His important writings include Psychology of the Unconscious (1912) and Psychological Types (1921).
