Inigo Jones

Inigo Jones, (1573-1652). English architect and stage designer. He visited Italy and was greatly influenced by Palladio’s classical style of architecture. In 1605 he began to design scenery and costumes for court masques and later introduced the proscenium arch and mutable scenery to England. As Surveyor to the Crown (1615-42) he designed his best-known buildings, The Queen’s House, Greenwich (1616-35) and the Banqueting Hall, Whitehall (1619-22). His other works include the portico of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Piazza at Covent Garden.
