Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse, (1869-1954). French artist, a leading member of the Fauves, a group of painters active from 1905 to 1908. Their style, called Fauvism, distorted or simplified natural forms for the sake of design and pattern and employed lively pure colours. The style had great influence on subsequent modern painting. Matisse’s skill with colour and decoration can be seen in the chapel he designed for the Dominicans at Vence, France (1949-51).
