Eugene O’Neill
Eugene O’Neill, (1888-1953). US dramatist. The s touring actors, he worked as a seaman from 1907 on, of 1912 he developed tuberculosis and spent six months a sanatorium; it was during this confinement that he began to write. He won growing recognition as a-dramatist from 1916 onwards and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1936. His plays, which are sombre and intense, include Desire Under the Elms (1924) the trilogy Mourning Becomes Electra (1931), The Iceman; Cometh (1946), and Long Day’s Journey into Night (1956), which is based on the unhappy experiences of his early life.
