Otto I

Otto I, known as Otto the Great (912-73). King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor. He succeeded to the throne in 936 and deliberately used the bishops to strengthen his rule. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope John XII (962), but subsequently had him deposed and elected a pope of his own choice. During his reign Otto had a constant struggle to control the powers of the German dukes whilst holding the invading Magyars at bay in eastern Europe.
