Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, (1874-1922). British explorer. He served in the merchant navy and joined Scott’s first Antarctic expedition (1901-04). In 1908-09 he commanded an expedition in the Nimrod, during which he located the south magnetic pole. In an attempt to cross Antarctica his ship was caught in pack ice and he drifted north on ice floes for months before reaching Elephant Island. He died during a return expedition.
