Suleiman the Magnificent

Suleiman the Magnificent (c. 1494-1566) Sultan of the Ottomon Turks from 1520. He enlarged the Ottoman Empire with campaigns in Europe and North Africa; he also fought against Persia (1534-55). By the end of his reign Belgrade, Budapest, Rhodes, Baghdad, and Algiers had all been added to the Ottoman Empire. He was also a patron of the arts and built several magnificent mosques in Constantinople. His important administrative reforms earned him the title of ‘the Lawgiver’.
