Alexander Nevski

Alexander Nevski (1220-63). Russian prince. He was appointed prince of Novgorod and defeated the Swedes on the River Neva (1240), from which he acquired the name Nevski. In 1242 he secured a decisive victory against the Teutonic Knights on the ice of Lake Peipus. He became grand prince of Vladimir and was canonized after his death.
