Jacques Delors

Jacques Delors (1925), French politician and economist. After graduating from the University of Paris in 1945, Delors became a head of department at the Banque de France, a position he held until 1962. There-after he worked mainly as a public servant, taking a special interest in economic affairs. A socialist, he was elected to the European parliament in 1979. As president of the European Commission (1985-94) he formulated the Delors Plan for greater European Union and was a leading architect of the Maastricht Treaty (1992). He was appointed to the Legion of Honour 1992.
