Jacques Chirac

Jacques Chirac (1932), French politician served as President of France and ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra from 1995 to 2007. Chirac was born in Paris and educated at the Ecole Natibnale d’Administration. A Gaullist, he was first elected to the National Assembly in 1967. He was appointed prime minister in 1974 but resigned two years later owing to differences with President Giscard d’Estaing. He was again prime minister under President Mitterand (1986-88) and a long-serving mayor of Paris (1977-95). As president he aroused widespread anger with his decision to resume French nuclear testing in the Pacific. In late 1995 proposed cuts in welfare spending led to the worst public unrest since 1968.
