Frederick I of Prussia

Frederick I of Prussia (1123-90). Holy Roman Emperor, known as Barbarossa. He succeeded his father as duke of Swabia and was crowned emperor in Rome in 1155. During a struggle against the pope (1159-77) he was excommunicated and decisively defeated in the battle of Legnano (1176). He drowned while on the Third Crusade to free Jerusalem.
