Water Hyacinth

Water hyacinth is a free floating perennial aquatic plant. With broad, thick, glossy, ovate leaves water hyacinth may rise above the surface of the water as much as 1 meter in height and float above the water surface long, spongy bulbous stalks. Due to its fast growth rates, water hyacinth can become a dangerous weed outside its native habitat. If they are not cleared away soon, they can cover all the water with blocking water ways and preventing irrigation. Even they can deprive other aquatic life of sunlight by shady their water. But water hyacinths can be used for all sorts of different things. Water hyacinths can be made into good fertilizer by collecting and drying them in the sun. Farmers can use this fertilizer to grow more crops and vegetables in their field. Parts of the plant are also used in the production of traditional handicrafts. They have also been to remove toxic materials such as cyanide from water. Recently the plant is often observed as a tool in nitrification in waste water treatment cells. They can also provide a food source for gold fish, keep water clean and help to provide oxygen to man-made ponds. It can be used as cattle food and producing biogas. Chairs, tables and other pieces of furniture can be made from it. Even paper can be made. Although water hyacinth is one kind of weeds, it is not worse than useless if we use them properly and with a systematic way.
