Lakshmipath Rumani Ammal

Lakshmipath, Rumani Ammal, 1891-1951, political and social worker. Grand-daughter of a diwan of Travancore, she had the benefit of good education and learnt both Latin and French. She was married in December 1910, to Dr. Achanta Lakshmipathi, who was a staunch nationalist. She was very active in social work and women’s welfare, and was responsible for much social legislation relating to women. She was also an active Congress worker and was arrested many times for her political activities. She was also the Deputy Speaker of the Madras Legislative Council in 1937 during the first Congress ministry. Intesely interested in Harijan uplift she give away all her jewellery for the Harijan Welfare Fund of Mahatma Gandhi.
