Romila Thapar

Romila Thapar, 1931, historian. Born in a well known Punjabi family, she took her doctorate at London University in 1958, and later served as a lecturer in Ancient History at the London University School of Oriental and African Studies. She later joined the Delhi University. She made a study tour of Buddhist caves in China, in 1957, including the Tun-Hung caves in the Gobi desert. She is the author of Asoka and the Decline of the Mauryas, and A History of India.
