Armstrong, Neil

Armstrong, Neil (1930), US astronaut. He got his first pilot’s licence at 16 and became a naval aviator in the Korean War. In 1955 he joined NASA as an aeronautical research pilot. He started astronaut training in 1962 and went on two Gemini missions. On 20 July 1969, as command pilot of Apollo XI, he became the first man to set foot on the moon. He was professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati from 1971 until 1979.
