Claude Monet, (1840-1926). French painter, the only impressionist to win international recognition in his lifetime. His paintings of gardens, boating scenes, and other landscapes emphasized subtle variations of light and atmosphere. Having retired to his house and garden at Giverny, on the Seine, he worked on his famous cycle of waterlily paintings from 1914 until his death.
