Gioacchino Antonio Rossini

Gioacchino Antonio Rossini, (1792-1868). Italian composer. Rossini was born into a musical family and studied in Bologna. His first operatic success was Tancredi. (1813); amongst the many operas that followed the best known are The Barber of Seville (1816), Cinderella (1817), and William Tell (1829). At the age of 37, however, Rossini gave up serious composition. He later wrote some short instrumental pieces collectively called Sins of My Old Age. A renowned gourmet, he also became famous for his spectacular recipes, such as Tournedos Rossini.
