Herbert Spencer

Herbert Spencer, (1820-1903). British philosopher and sociologist. In 1860 he began to compile the major work Synthetic Philosophy, which occupied him until 1896. It is a series of volumes including The Principles of Sociology (1876-96) and The Principles of Ethics (1892-93). Spencer was an adherent of the theory of evolution developed by Charles Darwin and a pioneer of sociology.
