Hippocrates

Hippocrates (c. 460-377 BC). Greek physician, whose name became associated with a number of medical writings (the Hippocratic Collection). The Collection contains works on all aspects of medicine, including directions for treatment to restore the balance of the fluids or four bodily ‘humours’, the disturbance of which was thought to cause disease. The ‘Hippocratic Oath’ a code of ethics defining a physician’s relationship with his patient, survives to this day.
