Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms (1833-97). German composer. He came from a poor family and was working as a music teacher when he met the Hungarian violinist Eduard Remenyi and toured with him (1853). During the con-cert tour he met Schumann and his wife Clara, who encouraged him to begin composing. Brahms fell in love with Clara, and after Schumann’s death in 1856 they remained close friends. His works include the popular Hungarian Dances (1873), inspired by his association with Remenyi, four symphonies (1876-85), and the choral work A German Requiem (1868).
