Lawrence Oates

Lawrence Oates, (1880-1912). British Antarctic ex-plorer, a member of Scott’s Antarctic expedition (1910-13). After reaching the South Pole, Oates was suffering from severe frostbite. Knowing that he would be a burden to his companions on the return journey, he walked out into a blizzard to die. Oates’s last words were recorded in Scott’s diary:”I am just going outside, and may be some time”.
