Pope Gregory I

St Gregory I (540-604), Italian pope. In 572 he achieved the highest civilian office in Rome, that of urban prefect, but resigned two years later and donated his inheritance to establish monasteries. Elected pope in 590, he initiated reforms in the Church and established missions in England (596). He was canonized on his death.
