Prince Henry the Navigator
Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460). Portuguese prince. Although he made no voyages himself, he directed and promoted exploration and colonization of hitherto un-explored lands, including the west coast of Africa, the Azores, and Madeira. He set up an observatory and a school of navigation and financed many of the early voyages himself.
