Sir Francis Beaufort
Sir Francis Beaufort, (1774-1857). British admiral and hydrographer. In 1808 Beaufort drafted the scale of wind strengths that has become the standard table for measuring the forces of winds. The scale ranges from calm (0) to hurricane force (12-17). Beaufort classified the grades by the amount of sail that could be carried by a warship in each wind force.
