William Morris

William Morris, (1834-96). British craftsman, poet, and socialist. Morris became an artist through the influence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In 1861 he set up the firm of Morris and Co., which produced wallpapers, tapestries, furniture, and stained glass. His poetry, designs, and socialist ideals reflected his interest in the Middle Ages, which he regarded as a period when Work craftsmanship, and art had been closely linked. His romance News from Nowhere (1891) expressed his horror of industrialization. Morris was largely responsible for the revival of handicrafts in England and for a revolution in- the arts of furnishing and house decoration.
