Woodrow Wilson, (1856-1924). US statesman; 28th president of the US (1913-21). A lawyer and academic, he became Democratic governor of New Jersey in 1911 and a year later was elected president. Re-elected in 1916, he kept the US out of World War I until the Ger-man U-boat campaign forced him to enter it in 1917.He argued for “peace without victory” and put for-ward a list of ‘Fourteen Points’, upholding democracy and self-determination, which were intended to form the basis for the peace treaty at Paris. Wilson suffered a stroke and retired soon afterwards.
