Recognize main and subordinate clauses.

A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a predicate. A main clause can stand on its own as a sentence; a subordinate clause cannot.

In the following examples, main clauses are underlined and subordinate clauses are in boldface.

Suki went to the store because she ran out of milk. Before he did his homework, Danny ate dinner.
