People should become more conscious now while buying the products – just because your favourite celebrities endorse it.

Good morning!

I, Divya of Class XII, Humanities, am standing in front of you to speak in the favour of the motion ‘Are celebs responsible for the products they endorse?’

Recently, a group of homebuyers sought a remedy by embarrassing the celebrity endorser of the real estate project they had invested in on social media. Indian Cricket Team Captain M.S. Dhoni, who prominently featured in the ads for the project, found himself embroiled in their ire. A court notice was issued against celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit, seeking an explanation from them regarding the promotion of Maggie Noodles. I think it is justifiable to hold these brand ambassadors responsible for promoting these products. Most of the time, people buy certain products just because their favourite celebrities endorse it. The main role of an ambassador is to create awareness among the customers, regarding a particular product. They should not mislead a consumer with wrong facts and figures. So they must accept the role of an ambassador only after conducting a careful research. If not a research, they should at least try the product on themselves before endorsing it.

Above all, every celebrity signs a contract before endorsing a product. If a product fails to satisfy the consumers or falls into a controversy during the tenure of the contract, the brand ambassadors are equally responsible as the company. Let’s not forget that these brand ambassadors charge handsome money for endorsing a particular product.

I am glad to inform you that a parliamentary standing committee on food, consumer affairs and public distribution has proposed stringent provisions to regulate celebrity endorsements. The recommendations include fines upto 50 lakh or a jail term of upto five years.

I hope my views will be well appreciated by the audience.

Thank you and have a cheerful day.
