David Hockney

David Hockney (1937- ). British artist, photographer, and designer. Hockney was born in Bradford and began to attract attention while still a student at the Royal College of Art (1959-62). During the 1960s his witty drawings and portraits caused him to be associated with the British Pop Art movement. His earlier works include the series of etchings A Rake’s Progress (1963) and the group portrait Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy (1971). Since the mid 1970s he has lived mainly in California. His works from this period include numerous paintings of swimmers and swimming pools and a series of photographic collages. He is also well known for his designs for plays and operas. A major retrospective of his drawings opened in London in 1995.
