David Livingstone

David Livingstone, (1813-73). Scottish missionary and explorer. He studied medicine and in 1840 was ordained as a missionary. The following year he went to southern Africa and began a series of expeditions. These included the crossing of the Kalahari desert and the discovery of the Zambezi River (1851) and Victoria Falls (1855). He married Mary Moffat, the daughter of the missionary Robert Moffat, in 1844. She died in 1862, during his expedition to Lake Malawi (formerly Nyasa). Livingstone then began his search for the source of the Nile. Feared lost in 1871, he was found by the explorer Stanley near Lake Tanganyika, but died while contin-uing his search. He published a number of books and journals, including The Zambezi and Its Tributaries (1865), in which he protested against slavery. Livy, full name Titus Liviu (c. 59 Bc-17 AD). Roman his-torian. About one quarter of his massive history of Rome survives, describing the early history of the city and her wars against Hannibal, Macedonia, and Syria. His swift narrative and vivid characterization make his work interesting to read and he is considered one of the greatest Roman historians.

“When Mr. Stanley entered Ujiji pm Nov 3 1871 with the procession of his servants he found a crowd of people in the street attracted by his approach. In the centre of a group of Arabs, to the left hand, he perceived a pale, grey-bearded white man, dressed in. a shirt -or jacket of red serge, with trousers, and wearing on his head a naval cap with a gold band. “Dr Livingstone, I presume,” said Mr Stanley in accosting him with the calmness of an ordinary greeting at first sight, as he might have done in New York or London. Illustrated Londori News 9 November 1872”
