John Howard

John Howard, (1726-90). British prison reformer. On his way to Lisbon in 1755 he was captured by the French and imprisoned. This experience led him to campaign for penal reform and an improvement in prison conditions. He was appointed High Sheriff of Bedfordshire (1773) and wrote State of Prisons in England and Wales, with an Account of some Foreign Prisons (1777).
