Why is a nurse helping in child birth, called a mid-wife?
Mid-wife is a woman who is trained to help deliver babies and offer support and advice to carrying mothers. The term mid-wife probably originated in the 13th century from an obsolete preposition mid (meaning ‘with’ in Old English) + wife (an archaic sense of woman). Midwife thus refers to a woman who is with the mother.
