Jindan Kaur
Jindan Kaur, 1863, Queen-Regent of Punjab. Daughter of an officer in charge of royal kennels, she married Ranjit Singh (1780-1839) in 1835, and gave birth to a son, Dalip Singh, on 6 September 1837. She acted as the regent to her son, when Dalip Singh was placed on the throne of Punjab in 1844. She was an ambitious lady and was accused of plotting against the British and was divested of all powers in 1846 and removed from Lahore to Sheikhupura. In 1847, she was deported from Punjab and sent to Varanasi. She made a daring escape to Nepal in April 1849, but was later allowed to join her son who had been exiled to England. She died on 1 August 1863 in London.
