Nanibala Devi

Nanibala Devi, 1888-1967, revolutionary. Born in a lower middle class Brahimn family of Howrah, she was married at the age of 11 but became a widow five years later. She found shelter with her nephew, Amarendranath Chattopadhya who introduced her to the revolutionary Jugantar Party, and she became closely associated with the revolutionary movement in Bengal. She was hounded by the police all over India and was arrested in Peshawar in 1917 and subjected to inhuman tortures in jail. She was released in 1919 following a general amnesty. She was still followed by the secret police, and she ultimately took to a religious life. She was awarded a political pension by the Government of West Bengal, in 1950.
