Where were leeches used in medicine?

In the past, one of the most popular ways of  draining poisons out of a patient was by blood-letting. Doctors placed blood-sucking leeches on their patient’s skin to suck out the poison.

The Romans used blood-sucking leeches about 2,200 years ago. The practice continued all over Europe for many hundreds of years until this century.
