Why do the passengers fall backward when the bus starts suddenly?

According to Newton’s first law of motion, an object continues to remain in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless acted upon by an external force. When the bus starts suddenly, the passengers tend to remain in their state of rest because of inertia. That is why they fall backward.
